After significant flood damage caused by equipment failure at the Hartford Public Library’s flagship downtown branch, Downes was selected as Construction Manager to lead the repairs and a full-scale renovation. The project was carefully phased to maintain public access to key areas while allowing construction to move forward efficiently behind the scenes.
The revitalized 24,000-square-foot space now offers a more welcoming and accessible environment, with a new elevator, upgraded energy-efficient lighting, and striking multi-material flooring throughout. Acoustical fabric panels were installed to improve sound quality, and the interior was refreshed with modern finishes and redesigned office spaces. A new café near the main entrance adds to the inviting atmosphere.
As part of the renovation, Downes also coordinated the delicate removal, storage, and reinstallation of two 20-foot-square art pieces, ensuring their preservation and continued presence in the space.
Despite several design refinements made throughout the project, the team maintained momentum and delivered ahead of schedule—ensuring a smooth and well-received grand reopening for the library.
