Downes was selected by the Town of Newington to manage the new 75,000 sf town hall and community center to be built in the upper town hall parking lot. The new building allows for improved resident access to Town Services, an open floor plan, and a reduction of 28,000 square feet from Newington’s existing deteriorating and leaky town hall.
The new layout provides more storage spaces and a discrete entrance for human services and board of education offices with an open floor plan, Town Council chambers, community television and the Transition Academy.
Within the community center there is also a daycare, multi-purpose room for special events, commercial kitchen adjacent to the multi-purpose room, and an art room for kids’ summer programs. The multipurpose room can function as 1 large space or can be separated into 3 rooms by using operable partitions. The gym is complete with 2 scoreboards, 14 motorized basketball hoops, telescoping motorized bleachers to accommodate approximately 1,000 people and acoustical divider to enable 2 games at the same time. There are also bathrooms, showers, locker rooms are alongside the gym for community use.
