University of Hartford Handel Performing Arts Center

Downes, in partnership with Capital Restoration of Hartford, was selected as Construction Manager for the ambitious renewal and academic center for the famed Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford. The site was the historic Thomas Cadillac property, the first dedicated auto dealership in the country developed by General Motors of Detroit in the 1920’s.

The new center offers spaces designed for vocal, dance, theatre, and community programs. The scope of work included two performance spaces, rehearsal and recital rooms, dance studios, teaching and office space, a performance library, classrooms, a scene shop, costume shop, community space, bank and café. The arts programs are supported with state-of-the-art student rehearsal spaces, with lighting, acoustics, flooring, movable seating, and other amenities of any top-flight arts facility.
