The project consisted of the historic restoration of the City Hall and relocation of the Fire Headquarters. It required maintaining the building’s early 20th century charm while providing the city’s government with the conveniences and safety requirements of the 21st century facility. Many fine elements were restored including the marble and brick exterior, mahogany windows, terrazzo flooring, ornate plaster ceilings, and nearly 60 brass light fixtures.
The exteriors and facades restored included marble cornices and balustrades, ornamental masonry and leaded glass. Additionally, new roofs, windows and doors were installed. Since the building is a state landmark, the restoration work was done in compliance with the State of CT Historical Preservation Office.
Restoration of the intricate landscaped plaza with fountains and massive bronze flagpoles returned the space to its original civic grandeur.
