Newfield + Downes JV was the Construction Manager for the renovation of the old Weaver High School for the Blue Hills community. This renovated high school focuses its learning on three academies – Performing Arts, Journalism, and Media and Business. Weaver High School partners with the University of Hartford, allowing Arts & Sciences students to participate in the early college experience by attending classes at the University of Hartford for dual credit.
The existing building was completely gutted and rebuilt from the ground up. The only pieces remaining from the original structure were the steel beams. The new space was designed for a student body of 2,000 and renovated facility educates 900. This High Performance Building Standards facility houses 200-250,000 sf of classrooms and common and support spaces.
Phase 1 of construction included hazardous materials abatement and demolition. Phase 2 reconstructed the facility while the field house was rebuilt in Phases 3 and 4.
The team focused on supporting the community and worked closely with the Blue Hills Civic Association and Weaver students through the ACE Mentor and Shadowing Programs. They were also committed to engaging and developing M/WBE business and using local Hartford workforce to complete this complex project. A PLA was also utilized.
